July 4th, America’s Independence Day. But today, in Tajrish Square, Tehran, Iranians gathered for their martyred leader—assassinated by the United States and Israel—not to mourn, but to cry out for independence. On the very day America celebrates its 250th birthday, I thought of Washington’s and Adams’ warnings against excessive attachment to foreign powers. Yet America itself became the monster, and Israel now dominates its policies. Today, Iran stands against an empire, fighting for its freedom and the right to live in peace.
