There are two main branches of Irfan (Islamic mysticism): Irfan-e Nazari (theoretical mysticism) and Irfan-e Amali (practical or action-oriented mysticism). Theoretical mysticism resembles philosophy, focusing on understanding the secrets of existence and the divine names of Allah. Practical mysticism, by contrast, is a dynamic path of action that elevates a person from worldly attachments to the highest spiritual stations and nearness to Allah. It is not merely intellectual knowledge of divine realities; rather, it demands concrete daily actions that place Allah and His will above all personal needs and desires. Mysticism is often portrayed as a private, secluded lifestyle detached from society, politics, or war. In reality, however, it plays a profound and hidden role even in the realms of war, politics, and the current conflict we face—one whose impact is immense for those who recognize and practice it. This perspective may also help explain why this war had to occur at this particular time and in this specific manner.
The Concept of Asma’ Allah (The Names of Allah):
Before proceeding further, it is essential to understand the concept of Asma’ Allah—the Names of Allah. These names describe the divine attributes through which Allah’s greatness manifests in creation. Examples include Al-‘Alim (the All-Knowing), As-Sami’ (the All-Hearing), and Al-Khaliq (the Creator). A key distinction of Islamic mysticism compared to Christian or Jewish mysticism lies in its emphasis on the knowledge and realization of these divine Names. Unlike ordinary names that many of us have, each divine Name represents a specific attribute and its active manifestation in the world. For instance, calling someone a “scientist” highlights a particular capability and value they possess; similarly, each Name of Allah reveals one dimension of His infinite perfection as it unfolds through creation. Some Names interact harmoniously and can combine to produce new manifestations—a process known as Tanazu’ al-Asma’ (the interplay or mutual attraction of the Names).
Compatible attributes, such as Knowledge and Power, naturally reinforce one another. Others, however, are inherently conflicting, such as the Guide (Al-Hadi) and the Deceiver (Al-Mudill), or Justice and Injustice. Allah possesses the power both to guide whom He wills and to allow deception for those who oppose Him or seek to harm His believers. Conflicting Names cannot fully manifest together in equal measure; when they confront one another, they generate tension and conflict.
Why Conflict Exists: The Divine Purpose of Imbalance:
Why does Allah permit—or even ordain—such conflicts? In a state of perfect balance, many divine attributes remain latent and inactive. Growth, elevation, and true realization require deviation from equilibrium. This imbalance activates opposing attributes, sparking conflict. Through these struggles, higher and more refined levels of balance are eventually achieved. In the grand divine scheme, Allah’s purpose is for humanity to mature, evolve, and rise above hardships to draw closer to Him. This principle applies universally—whether in education, leadership, military training, or any domain of human endeavor: constructive conflict fosters growth and strength. What begins as subtle tensions between incompatible attributes intensifies over time. When unresolved, these tensions escalate until they reach a boiling point and manifest outwardly as physical confrontation. One side ultimately prevails, eliminating the opposing imbalance and establishing a higher order.
The Current War as a Cosmic Manifestation:
The war we are engaged in today is precisely such a manifestation: a struggle to correct profound global imbalance and usher in a superior level of equilibrium. It is the battle between justice and injustice, knowledge and arrogance, strength and weakness—ultimately, between the followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the followers of Satan. In this sense, we are participating in the natural progression the world must undergo to evolve into a purer expression of itself, much like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. Good reaches its highest potential only when confronted by evil at its strongest. According to Shia sources, the pinnacle of this cosmic struggle will occur at Akhir al-Zaman—the end of times, coinciding with the return of Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his appearance).
The Islamic Revolution and the Escalation Toward War
The Islamic Revolution of 47 years ago can be understood as a powerful manifestation of the most exalted divine Names opposing the global imperialistic hegemony of its era. The clearest evidence that the Revolution has remained faithful to its pure essence is the fact that opposition to it has grown ever larger, fiercer, and more relentless in its pursuit of its destruction. Decades of sanctions, Netanyahu’s repeated attempts to weaken or topple the Islamic Republic, the return of Trump, and the increasingly direct confrontations—all these pressures intensified the imbalance. The martyrdom of Sardar Soleimani and Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah further deepened it. The tipping point arrived with the martyrdom of Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei and other key political and military leaders, which ignited the present war. The targeting and martyrdom of Imam Khamenei and senior leaders demonstrate that the essence of the Revolution has remained uncorrupted. The enemy perceives these figures as an existential threat—proof that the revolutionary spirit continues to embody the divine attributes that challenge tyranny.
Irfan-e Amali: Practical Mysticism in Action
Practical mysticism (Irfan-e Amali) centers on complete self-effacement—forgetting one’s ego and seeing only Allah, placing His will above every personal desire. The ultimate expression of this state is jihad in the way of Allah, especially the willingness to sacrifice one’s most precious possession: life itself. This is why Imam Khomeini observed that certain soldiers defending Islam and the Islamic Republic traversed in a single night a spiritual journey that might otherwise require a hundred years. Many scholars never achieve such ascent simply because they lack the opportunity to offer their lives directly in the service of Allah. Politics is rarely viewed as a path of selflessness or divine sacrifice. Yet when a leader holds a position of authority, fully aware that he has become an enemy target, and chooses to stand firm without fleeing or hiding, his stance is no less heroic or spiritually elevated than that of the fighter on the battlefield who risks his life in the line of fire. In this light, both the battlefield and the political arena become arenas of practical mysticism, where the soul is refined through total surrender to the divine will. The ongoing war, therefore, is not merely geopolitical; it carries profound spiritual dimensions and conceals secrets accessible primarily to those immersed in the path of Irfan.
